Always ask the right questions

When one is experiencing a panic attack, it usually is very difficult for them to focus clearly. This is why it is vital that you ask only the necessary and most important questions. Always inquire about what might be the cause of the attack. If the victim does not know what caused the attack, then do not be persistent in your questioning.

Eliminate or remove the cause

At this stage, it is either you get rid of the trigger or you take the victim to a different area away from the cause of the attack. The place should be calm and open. Always obtain permission from the individual before touching them, because if you do not, you may end up scaring them further and worsening the situation.

Talk to the person in a calm and reassuring way

Although it may be difficult for you, you will be required to remain as calm, reassuring and composed as possible. Seek to assure them that everything is okay. Repeat this words until the individual feels comfortable and steadily the symptoms will mellow away.

Keep them cool

It is common that a person who has had a panic attack may have some warmth on their face and neck. You are advised to use a warm cloth, to wipe them to minimise the severity of the attack. Make them take a glass of cold water, but ensure that they sit upright in the first place.

Stay with them

The best thing that you can do to an individual who has had a panic attack is keeping them company unless they request otherwise. Do this until they are back to their usual self.
